Located on the highest point in Cleveland, the monks of St. Andrew Abbey ascend to God through a life of prayer and work. Faithful to the Magisterium and His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, the Benedictine monks run an all boys college preparatory Benedictine High School. With over thirty monks, the monks of St. Andrew continue the 1,500 year wisdom of their founder St. Benedict in “preferring nothing whatsoever to Christ (Rule of St. Benedict 72).”
Welcome to the Saint Andrew Svorad Abbey Website. Our Abbey was founded ninety years ago in 1922 by a small group of Slovak monks from Saint Procopius Abbey, located in Illinois. Our abbey has continued to grow and is still active in the Diocese of Cleveland, reaching out and sharing our hospitality and Holy Rule with those who come to our door, to those we serve and minister to in our Benedictine High School, our parish of Assumption in Broadview Heights, in our Retreat House in Clinton, Ohio, and in the many parishes we help out on the weekends.
We continue to live by the Holy Rule of our founder, Saint Benedict established over 1500 years ago. St. Benedict’s Rule is simply an extension of Holy Scripture, a life of committed to (vowed) discipleship to Jesus. How do we achieve this? Through Ora et Labora: prayer and work which are combined in a harmonious balance.
The Holy Rule of St. Benedict has not only been an influential guide for monks, but is also an influence on many aspects of Christian life because of its emphasis on moderation and balance in all areas of living.
I invite you to continue to view our website to get some insights and ideas of what our monastic life is here at the abbey.
May God be with you and watch over you. May you find all that you seek and may God’s peace and love be with you.
Sincerely in Saint Benedict,
Abbot Christopher Schwartz, OSB
